In the end my Tom Hardy portrait sold for £113 for the homeless charity FLACK. Thanks to Kirsten and Wes at Flack who organized the auction on e-bay and helped promote it through their contacts.
Well, I'm starting the New Year with a lot of new artwork to draw. I've started drawing a Star Wars piece and I'm designing a tattoo based on the Japanese animation of Studio Ghibli. When I've got those two out of the way, I'm moving on to another Tom Hardy drawing and a Superman piece based on the new film Man Of Steel. All of these I'm really excited about and I'm looking forward to getting stuck into them. I've just finished inking the Studio Ghibli tattoo and Im about to start to colour it.

I recently finished drawing my portrait of the great British actor Tom Hardy. He's one of my favourite actors along side Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Johnny Depp and Ryan Gosling to name a few. He can play so many different type of roles and manages to change his look and personality for each one. I wanted to demonstrate this in my artwork. So I picked my favourite roles of his and set about designing a composition that would be interesting but also work together as one whole piece of artwork rather than a few images stuck together. After sketching a few thumbnail drawings I settled on one and got to work on it straight away. I started with the main image of him looking straight towards the viewer then worked clockwise from their. I didn't want to rush this, so I took my time with each character making sure I caught their personality in my drawing as much as I could. Bane was the most fun to draw and probably the hardest too, due to the intricate way his mask is put together. I love the Dark Knight trilogy so I wanted to make sure this came out right. All through this process I was posting my progress on various websites such as Facebook and I was getting a huge response with great feedback. This started me thinking that perhaps I should do something different with it when I've finished it rather than just sell it. Shortly after this, I had the idea that I would put it up for auction and the person with the highest bid could have the original piece of artwork. I posted this on one of the many Tom Hardy fan sites that are out there and one person suggested that I should auction it off for the homeless charity FLACK which Tom Hardy is a Patron of. I thought this was a great idea and I would also be helping out a great cause. So I contacted Flack, sent them the artwork and they've put it up for auction on E-Bay. So help spread the word and follow the link below to place a bid and help raise loads of cash for a great charity! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160931947336. www.flackcambridge.org.uk I was commissioned to draw a pencil portrait for a babies christening. It was going to be given to the Godparent as a gift which I thought was a lovely idea. Now I always feel a bit of pressure when I've got to draw 'real' people so to speak, as opposed to drawing famous people. I think it's because i want and need the likeness to be really good and the portraits Im often asked to draw are normally of loved ones so the artwork needs to be as spot on as i can get it. Now, a big important part of helping me get a good drawing is how good the quality of the photo I'm given to draw from is. If you give me a blurred out of focus photo with the details of the face not clear, then I'm not going to get a great drawing out of it. Fortunately, I was given a good photo and was quite happy with how the drawing turned out. A problem I find when drawing babies, is that if your not careful they can end up looking like a bald geriatric. The wrong line in the wrong place or wrong weight of line can alter the look of the drawing in seconds, so i tried to avoid this. I also shaded with a hard pencil for most of it, a 2H and a H mainly, to try to make the drawing lighter. In the end i was quite happy with it and so was the client, which is always the main thing. This is the finished Sherlock piece. I had the idea to draw it as a jigsaw from the start. He's a detective and has to solve crimes and look for clues, so i thought drawing him as a puzzle would be perfect. The background took me a while to draw and it wasn't the easiest thing to pull off. I used a light pencil 'H' to draw with for this. I didn't want the jigsaw to dominate the actuall portrait too much, As with most of my artwork, i photocopied my original drawing and experimented with different ways to draw the jigsaw pieces on the photocopies. I liked the idea of having some of the pieces missing, It was inspired by the fact that he needs to find all the missing pieces to solve the puzzle, i.e the crime. Done, done, on to the next one..... On Saturday I went to see Avengers Assemble, now being a fanboy at heart, I always had high expectations of this film especially when it was announced that Joss Whedon would be co writing and directing the film. I've been a big fan of his work ever since Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel through to the underated Firefly and Serenity. His run on Astonishing X-Men was one of the best comic book series I've read in many years, he knew the personalities and history of every character and wrote them perfectly. Whedon is used to handling a big cast of characters in all his tv shows which makes him the perfect choice to be the man at the helm of Avengers Assemble. The film it self was awesome! It started off quite slow as Nick Fury gathered the team together but it soon picked up when the characters started to meet each other. All the heroes had a good amount of screen time, I was impressed with Mark Ruffalo's portrayal of Bruce Banner. He had the softly spoken slightly nerdy attitude about him and was instantly likeable, and he really made you feel for him when he couldn't control his temper any longer and Hulked out! Scarlett Johanssen was good as The Black Widow as well, which surprised me. She was much better in this film than in Iron Man 2, perhaps due to having a better script to work from. The big fight scene at the end of the film is amazing! Hulk kicks ass. As with any Joss Whedon script there's plenty of humour, and the Hulk gets alot of the best bits and in many ways steals the film. It's the best treatment of the Hulk on film so far and any scene he's in is great to watch. There's a sequence where the Avengers are battling the aliens as the camera pans from hero to hero as they fight to save Manhattan, it is a glorious moment in a film full of moments like this. Oh, and mid through the end credits there's an extra scene so stay tuned for that. I wont spoil it by telling you what happens, but any fan boy will enjoy it, but would probably be lost on anyone who doesn't read comic books much.As you can probably tell I loved this film. I could watch this time and time again and nether get bored of it. Takes a while to get going but then it just builds and builds to the crescendo of the final fight scene. Avengers Assemble rocks! Nuff said. Thought i would share this drawing of Optimas Prime from Transformers with you. As you can tell by the title of this post it was drawn by a ten year old. Now I know when I was that age i couldn't draw like that, and it's not like a Transformer is the easiest thing to draw. You might think it's just squares and rectangles but there's alot of different angles and perspective you've got to consider to draw a good Autobot or Decepticon.
For a ten year old, I think this drawing is brilliant. The kid has alot of talent and will grow up to be an amazing artist. Well, it all starts here, my first blog post. There's no going back now! Thought I'd start off with my pencil sketch of my next portrait I'm working on which is of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock. It's a great British series that presents an modern day update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. It's been one of the best things on TV I've watched in ages and it inspired me to want draw Sherlock and add him to my Famous People series of drawings. I drew this in pencil a while ago and due to a couple of commissions and revising for my driving theory test, I've only just been able to get back to it. I'm planning on doing something slightly different for the background but it's gonna take a lot of working out and rough work to get right, and he's hair alone is gonna take a lot of work too, but i should hopefully have it finished in the next week or two. |
